Chelsea’s chaotic transfer window ‘could leave Mauricio Pochettino’s pre-season plans in limbo’ after Blues’ hectic summer sees TWELVE players leave and six join before US tour

  • Chelsea’s chaotic summer window has seen 12 players leave the club so far
  • Blues have also signed six players, seeing the squad receive a massive overhaul
  • Mauricio Pochettino and his team will fly out on their pre-season tour on Monday

Chelsea’s chaotic transfer window could threaten to disrupt Mauricio Pochettino’s pre-season plans, given the major reconstruction to the Blues squad.

To date, 12 players have left and six have been signed by the Londoners, with a number of the departures first-team players, such as captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

As a result, the huge squad overhaul will have seen new boss Pochettino chop and change plans, given the frequency of incomings and outgoings.

And with Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the United States almost upon them, Pochettino may have to think on the fly with how he integrates new arrivals and filling the voids left by others.

The Blues are set to fly out to the US on Monday, where they will begin their pre-season campaign in North Carolina two days later on Wednesday against Wrexham – in what will be a much-changed squad from the one that ended the season with a 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea in the Premier League on May 28.

After facing Wrexham, the Blues then take on Brighton in Philadelphia (July 22), Newcastle in Atlanta (July 26), Fulham (July 30) and Borussia Dortmund (August 2).

Pochettino was confirmed as the new Chelsea manager at the end of May, and the former Tottenham boss will likely have started planning how to set-up his team long before that.

But since then, players who may have been in his thoughts could have been sold.

The list of departures makes for a breathless read: Mason Mount, Cesar Azpilicueta, Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Kai Havertz, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tiemoue Bakayoko, David Fofana (loan), Dujon Sterling, and Baba Rahman.

Chelsea are also pushing back the pre-season return date of three outcasts – Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – as they seek to find an exit door.

Multiple other players, who have not kicked on as the club would have liked, are also looking likely candidates to wave goodbye.

After returning from America, Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign at home to rivals Liverpool on August 13.
