Brentford have successfully completed the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Bundesliga side Freiburg for £11million.
Flekken has signed a four-year contract with the Bees after keeping 13 clean sheets in 34 Bundesliga matches during the 2022-2023 campaign.
As a result, Flekken – who made his international debut for the Netherlands in March 2022 – kept the most clean sheets in the division and helped Freiburg finish fifth.
Flekken has been brought in to replace Berntford’s No 1 goalkeeper David Raya as he is set to leave the Gtech Community Stadium this summer.
Speaking about the club’s new signing, Brentford manager Thomas Frank said: ‘We’re very happy to have signed Mark.

Thomas Frank says he’s a ‘very good shot-stopper and comfortable with the ball at this feet’
‘He’s a player with a lot of quality who will strengthen our goalkeeper group. He has big experience and joins us after two great seasons with Freiburg, who have just had a top season in the Bundesliga, finishing fifth and qualifying for the Europa League.
‘He was a big part of the team there and now he’s coming to us and will hopefully make the group better and the team better. He’s a very good shot-stopper and comfortable with the ball at his feet. His distribution is very impressive.’
First-team goalkeeper coach Manu Sotelo added: ‘Mark has been performing at a high level in the Bundesliga, being one of the best keepers there.
‘He will fit very well with our style of play. His strengths on the pitch are his quality on the ball, his agility as a shot-stopper, and his space awareness as a sweeper keeper and in defending crosses. His personality and leadership qualities are perfect for our culture. We are delighted to have him with us.’
Flekken will replace Raya – who has one year left on his contract and has refused several offers from Brentford for an extension.
Frank recently confirmed that the Spain international was the only goalkeeper they would be looking to sell this summer.
‘We only have one player for sale, that’s the one that’s been talked about. That’s David,’ said Frank. ‘He’s £40m. The rest? We are a selling club, but they need to be crazy high amounts if we want anyone to leave. Everyone here is very happy at Brentford.’
